Ghana Secures $12.8M Grant for Big Push Infrastructure

The Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has signed a US$12.83 million grant agreement with the African Development Bank (AfDB). The funding is earmarked for

feasibility studies and design development under the government's flagship Big Push programme.

The agreement was signed alongside the AfDB’s outgoing Country Manager, Eyerusalem Fasika. This grant marks a critical preparatory step for massive infrastructure and industrial works scheduled for late 2026.

Dr. Forson noted that the studies will include full engineering designs, costings, and environmental impact assessments. The goal is to ensure these projects are "shovel-ready" by the third quarter of this year.

Priority Projects Under Review

  • Urban Transport: A proposed major interchange at the 37 Military Hospital to solve Accra’s traffic gridlock.

  • Market Redevelopment: Modernization of four key hubs: Agbogbloshie, Techiman, Sekondi, and Mankessim.

  • Industrial Hubs: Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZ) in the Afram Plains, Nsawam, and Builsa.

A Strong Diplomatic Partnership

Dr. Forson extended his gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama and the AfDB for their continued collaboration. He praised Ms. Fasika for her results-driven leadership, which has secured significant technical and financial resources for Ghana.

The Big Push initiative is a cornerstone of the 2026 budget, with GH¢30.8 billion recently allocated to infrastructure. The program aims to shift the economy toward value-addition and large-scale industrialization.

In her final remarks, Ms. Fasika reaffirmed the AfDB’s commitment to Ghana’s development. She noted that the cooperation between the bank and the government has reached new milestones in economic transformation.

The Bottom Line

Ghana has locked in a $12.83 million AfDB grant to finalize designs for the 37 Military Hospital interchange and several agro-industrial zones, paving the way for construction to begin by Q3 2026.
