GWL and ECG Volta Strengthen Ties to Improve Service

Ing. Emmanuel Johnson, the newly appointed Volta Regional Chief Engineer of Ghana Water Limited (GWL), has paid a strategic working visit to the Electricity Company of

Ghana (ECG). The meeting with Ms. Christina Jatoe-Kaleo, ECG’s Regional General Manager, focused on resolving operational bottlenecks and financial hurdles for the 2026 year.

This high-level engagement marks a shift toward institutional harmony as both utilities face rising operational costs. The discussions aimed at ensuring that technical glitches do not disrupt the delivery of essential services to the people of the Volta Region.

Addressing the Debt and Technical Gap

The meeting centered on two major areas: financial sustainability and engineering efficiency. Key outcomes included:

  • Debt Resolution: Ms. Jatoe-Kaleo identified GWL as one of ECG’s major regional debtors and urged immediate steps to reduce outstanding arrears.

  • Head Office Strategy: Mr. Johnson proposed moving financial negotiations to the national headquarters level to find a sustainable, long-term solution.

  • Transformer Optimization: GWL successfully implemented ECG's technical recommendations to adjust transformer tap settings at their headworks, improving power stability for water pumping.

  • Team Synergy: The delegation included Mr. Radford Djan Amo, Regional Production Manager, ensuring that operational leads from both sides are aligned.

A United Front for Service Delivery

Both leaders reaffirmed that the success of one utility is deeply dependent on the other. ECG’s technical support is vital for GWL’s pumping stations, while GWL’s prompt payments are necessary for ECG’s revenue mobilization.

Ms. Jatoe-Kaleo congratulated Mr. Johnson on his new role, emphasizing that open communication would be the "new standard" for preventing service interruptions. This collaboration is expected to set a benchmark for other regions struggling with inter-utility debt and technical coordination.

The Bottom Line

Ghana Water and ECG in the Volta Region have committed to a head-office-led debt resolution plan and ongoing technical synergy to ensure reliable water and power for residents in 2026.
