"Delayed Gratification is the Path": NHIA Deputy CEO Launches Bernard Ahiafor Excellence Award at ABORSCO

The 60th Anniversary Celebration of Abor Senior High School (ABORSCO) has been immortalized with the launch of a new academic incentive: the "Bernard Ahiafor Excellence

Award." Announced on Saturday, February 21, by Dr. Senanu Kwasi Djokoto, Deputy CEO of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), the award scheme is designed to spark a new era of academic competition and "linguistic and intellectual sovereignty" among the student body. In addition to the award, Dr. Djokoto donated GH₵10,000 to support the milestone anniversary activities.

1. The Excellence Framework

Named in honor of the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament and MP for Akatsi South, Hon. Bernard Ahiafor, the scheme will reward the best-performing students across all year groups.

Award Category Target Group Reward Type
Top 3 Performers SHS 1 Recognition & Materials
Top 3 Performers SHS 2 Recognition & Materials
Top 3 Performers SHS 3 Recognition & University Prep
Best Female Student Overall (All Years) Special Recognition (Added Category)
The Grand Prize Outstanding Final-Year Students Full Scholarships

The "Ahiafor Amendment": During the ceremony, Hon. Bernard Ahiafor officially endorsed the initiative and proposed a fourth category specifically for the overall best female student to ensure gender-inclusive academic motivation.

2. Lessons in "Delayed Gratification"

Dr. Djokoto’s address to the students focused on the psychological blueprint of success. He challenged the youth to resist the distractions of the digital age and focus on long-term goals.

  • The Discipline Gap: Dr. Djokoto noted that the primary difference between ABORSCO’s past giants (professors and national leaders) and those who fail is the ability to choose delayed gratification over instant pleasure.

  • The Power of Potential: He reminded the students that ABORSCO has a "DNA of greatness," having produced the very man the award is named after—the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament.

3. The Vision for "ABORSCO at 75"

Looking ahead to the school's diamond jubilee and beyond, Dr. Djokoto expressed a bold vision for the next 15 years.

  • Target 2041: He predicted that by the school's 75th anniversary, ABORSCO would not just be celebrating institutional heads, but Presidents of the Republic and global business icons.

  • Sustained Support: "As long as God grants me life, I will continue to support this school," he pledged, signaling that the scholarship fund is intended to be a permanent fixture of the school's academic calendar.

4. Part of the 2026 "Educational Reset"

The launch of this private award scheme aligns with the broader national trend in 2026, where high-profile alumni and state officials are stepping in to complement the government’s GH₵9.1 billion basic education investment. By rewarding excellence at the local level, Dr. Djokoto is helping to ensure that the "Reset" reaches the classrooms of the Volta Region.

The Bottom Line

The Bernard Ahiafor Excellence Award is a call to action for the students of ABORSCO to reclaim their place as academic powerhouses. With GH₵10,000 already on the table and a scholarship pipeline established, the "Enclave of Excellence" in Abor is officially back in session.
