Gardening for the Future: UESD Launches 2026 Community Development Challenge for 30 Basic Schools

The University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD) in Somanya has officially launched the 2026 edition of its flagship Community

Development Challenge (CDC). This year’s competition focuses on organic school gardening, engaging 30 basic schools across the Eastern Region in a three-month practical battle to promote food security and climate-smart agriculture.

The challenge, launched on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, aims to transform pupils from passive learners into active "environmental ambassadors" capable of influencing their households and communities.

The 2026 Focus: Organic School Gardening

Unlike previous editions that focused on essay writing or plastic recovery, the 2026 CDC is strictly action-oriented. Participating schools will be judged on their ability to cultivate and sustain a "chemical-free" vegetable garden.

Competition Guidelines:

  • Duration: A three-month nurturing period monitored by university experts.

  • Crops: Carrots, cucumbers, lettuce, and garden eggs.

  • Organic Mandate: Strict prohibition of synthetic chemicals, pesticides, or fertilizers.

  • Replicability: Techniques must be simple enough for students to replicate in their own backyards.

Participating Schools (Selected):

  • Asokore Methodist JHS

  • Akwadum R/C Basic School

  • Aburi Presby B. JHS

  • Nuaso Saint Dominic R/C JHS

  • Oborpah West M/A

  • Agavenya R/C Basic

Reviving "Operation Feed Yourself"

During the launch, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of UESD, Professor Edward Wiafe Debrah, linked the initiative to Ghana’s historic "Operation Feed Yourself" program of the 1970s. He emphasized that the university's goal is to reduce household dependence on expensive, commercially grown vegetables.

"Children are so powerful in bringing change... they can educate their parents and peers and demonstrate responsible behavior to shape society." — Prof. Edward Wiafe Debrah

Dr. Frank Kweku Ackaah from the University of Cape Coast (UCC) further described these gardens as "multi-purpose laboratories" where science, nutrition, and leadership intersect.

Impact and Regional Collaboration

The Yilo Krobo Municipal Directorate for Agriculture has endorsed the program as a vital public health intervention. By teaching children to avoid chemical-heavy farming, the initiative addresses the rising concern over pesticide residues in the Ghanaian food chain.

The Bottom Line

The UESD Community Development Challenge is a cornerstone of the university's "HOPE" agenda (Honesty, Opportunity, Perseverance, and Enterprising). By targeting basic school pupils, UESD is betting on the "pester power" of children to drive a sustainable, organic farming revolution starting from the Eastern Region.
