"A Gift of Life": Cape Coast Teaching Hospital Unveils 8-Bed Specialized Stroke Unit

For years, the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital (CCTH) has faced a surge in stroke cases without a dedicated facility to provide the critical, time-sensitive care required for recovery. That

changed on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, with the official inauguration of a state-of-the-art 8-bed Stroke Care Unit.

The unit is a milestone in neurovascular care for the Central Region, made possible through a strategic partnership with the Korea Foundation for International Healthcare (KOFIH) Ghana.

Transforming Neurovascular Care in the Central Region

The new facility addresses a long-standing gap in the hospital's infrastructure, where patients in critical condition were previously managed in general wards.

Key Features of the Unit:

  • 8 Dedicated Beds: Specialized hospital beds designed for the complex needs of stroke patients.

  • Modern Monitoring: High-tech systems for continuous tracking of vital signs and neurological status.

  • Diagnostic Tools: On-site equipment to facilitate rapid assessment and intervention.

  • Trained Personnel: CCTH has invested in specialized training for healthcare staff to meet international standards of stroke management.

Strategic Goals and "Rapid Response"

The project lead, Dr. Romeo Boaheng, emphasized that the unit’s success relies on "Rapid-Response Protocols." The goal is to ensure that the moment a patient arrives, they enter a coordinated care pathway that reduces the "door-to-needle" time.

The Vision for the First Year:

The KOFIH Partnership: Strengthening Health Systems

Dr. Eric Ngyedu, CEO of CCTH, described the unit as a "gift of life." This collaboration with KOFIH is part of a broader trend of Korean support for Ghanaian healthcare, which includes previous investments in laparoscopic surgery and primary healthcare in the Volta and Oti regions.

Mrs. Seoyon Kook, Deputy Country Director of KOFIH Ghana, reaffirmed that because stroke is a leading cause of death in Ghana, specialized units are essential for improving national survival and long-term recovery statistics.

The Bottom Line

The inauguration of the CCTH Stroke Care Unit represents a "reset" for specialized medicine in Cape Coast. By combining modern technology with rapid-response training, the hospital is now equipped to turn the tide against one of Ghana's most devastating non-communicable diseases.
