President Mahama at the 39th AU Summit: The Diplomatic Itinerary

The President arrived in Addis Ababa on Thursday evening, leading a delegation focused on "The Accra Reset"—a strategic framework to move Africa from

being a "policy taker" to an "agenda setter."

1. The "Addis Reckoning" Breakfast (Saturday, Feb 14)

The centerpiece of the President's personal agenda is a breakfast event on Valentine’s Day at the Ethiopian Skylight Hotel.

  • Focus: This event, dubbed "Addis Reckoning," is the continental launch of the Accra Reset Initiative (ARI).

  • Objective: To reduce Africa's "triple dependency" on external actors for security, social services (aid), and mineral value chains. President Mahama aims to mobilize a "Guardians Circle" of leaders to move billions in externally held African investments back to the continent to finance development.

2. High-Level Engagements as AU Champion

As the AU Champion for Gender and Development, President Mahama co-hosted two critical side events on Friday, February 13:

  • Gender & Financial Inclusion: A high-level meeting to revitalize the WYFEI 2030 initiative (Women and Youth Financial and Economic Inclusion), aimed at closing the gender financing gap across Africa.

  • Reparations & Restitution: A panel titled "Reparations, Memory and Sovereignty," where Ghana, in partnership with UNESCO, advanced the Common African Position on the Restitution of Heritage Resources.

2026 AU Theme: Water and Sanitation (WASH)

While President Mahama leads the specialized agendas on Reparations and Gender, the 39th Assembly (meeting Feb 14–15) is officially centered on the 2026 theme:

"Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063"

Key Expected Outcomes for 2026:

Strategic Pillar Action Item
Water Security Endorsement of the Africa Water Vision 2026 (AWVP63).
Reparations Launching the Decade of Reparations (2026–2035).
G20 Solidarity Briefing on the outcomes of South Africa's 2025 G20 Presidency and Africa’s permanent seat.
AfCFTA Transitioning the free trade area from a legal treaty to "commercial reality."

The Bottom Line

President Mahama’s presence in Addis Ababa signals a shift in Ghana's foreign policy—one that bridges domestic "resetting" with continental "reckoning." By hosting the Addis Reckoning event, the President is inviting his peers to align with a new era of sovereign capacity, making February 14, 2026, a potentially historic date for the "Accra Reset" agenda.
