Smart Farming — How AI and Drones are Fighting Galamsey

While the Asantehene calls for tree crop diversification, the Responsible AI Lab (RAIL) at KNUST is providing the technology to make it possible. The fight against Galamsey (illegal

mining) has moved from "boots on the ground" to "eyes in the sky."

The 24-Hour Digital Watch:

The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat is now deploying a multi-layered tech defense:

  1. AI Satellite Analysis: Using Sentinel-2 data to detect minute changes in vegetation and soil composition before a mining site is even visible to the naked eye.

  2. Thermal Drones: Surveillance drones equipped with AI-driven image recognition now monitor forest reserves at night, feeding real-time visuals to a 24-hour control room at the Minerals Commission.

  3. Smart GPS Trackers: Since 2025, all imported excavators are required to have AI-enhanced GPS. The system uses "geofencing" to automatically alert authorities the moment an excavator enters a protected forest or water body.

Journalist’s Take:

These aren't just "cool gadgets." They are the essential infrastructure for a Green Economy. By using AI to protect our watersheds, Ghana is ensuring that the $12 billion tree crop vision isn't poisoned before it can grow.
