2026 Valentine’s Outreach: "Safe Love" Campaign

The West Hills Mall event was part of a broader nationwide push by the Ghana AIDS Commission and GHANET to promote responsible behavior during the

Valentine's festivities.

Key Testing Statistics from the Event:

  • Total Test Kits Distributed: 350

  • Assisted Testing (On-site): 150 individuals

  • Unassisted (Self-test) Kits Taken Home: 200 individuals

Administrative Manager Ms. Bernice Ababio noted that the high uptake of self-test kits indicates a growing preference for privacy among young people, which the Commission is actively supporting through new digital tools and vending machines.

HIV in Ghana: The 2026 Landscape

Despite significant progress, health officials expressed concern over a rise in new infections, particularly among the youth and in regions like Volta and Greater Accra.

Current National HIV Data (2024–2026 Estimates)

Metric 2024 Actuals 2026 Targets/Projections
New Annual Infections 15,290 Aiming for < 5,000
Total People Living with HIV 334,721
Primary Mode of Transmission 80% Sexual Intercourse Focus on Condom Use
National Prevalence (15–49 years) 1.49% Goal: 1.4% by 2030

"Because testing is going up, we are finding new cases which were already there. If you don’t test, you will not know." — Dr. Prosper Akanbong, DG, Ghana AIDS Commission

Progress Toward 95-95-95 Targets

Ghana is currently in the final push to meet the UNAIDS 2025 targets, which require 95% of people to know their status, 95% of those to be on treatment, and 95% of those to be virally suppressed.

  • First 95 (Know Status): 68% (Significant gap remains; intensified testing required)

  • Second 95 (On Treatment): 69% * Third 95 (Viral Suppression): 90% (Strongest performing area)

Looking Ahead: The 2026 Breakthrough

The Commission announced that long-acting Lenacapavir injections are slated for introduction later in 2026. This twice-yearly injection for both treatment and PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is expected to be a "game-changer" for those who struggle with daily pill adherence or stigma.

The Bottom Line

GHANET’s message for 2026 is clear: protection is non-negotiable. While the new long-acting injections offer hope for the future, consistent and correct condom use remains the most effective immediate tool for preventing the 80% of infections caused by sexual contact.
