The Anemia Crisis in Dormaa West

The Anemia Crisis in Dormaa West

The District Nutrition Officer, Mr. Wisdom Peprah, shared alarming data that prompted this intervention:

  • Current Rate: A sample of 212 women showed that 45% were anemic.

  • The Goal: The directorate aims to reduce this figure to 35% by June 2026.

  • The Risks: Health officials warned that untreated anemia in pregnancy leads to severe complications, including:

    • Excessive blood loss during delivery.

    • Preterm births.

    • Underweight babies.

Promoting the "Cocoa Belt" Diet

The District Director of Health, Mr. Daniel Owusu-Amponsah, urged residents to utilize the nutrient-dense local foods readily available in their own backyards rather than relying on less nutritious options.

Recommended Local Superfoods:

  • Kontomire (Cocoyam leaves): High in iron and folic acid.

  • Fruits and Mushrooms: Essential for vitamin absorption and overall health.

  • Traditional Dishes: Participants were shown healthy ways to prepare Ampesi, Konkonte, and Fufu paired with green leafy stews and soups.

Urgent Appeal for Incubators

Beyond nutrition, Mr. Owusu-Amponsah used the platform to highlight a critical infrastructure gap at the Dormaa West District Hospital.

The hospital currently lacks incubators, which are essential for the survival of the preterm babies often born to anemic mothers. The Director issued an urgent appeal to the government, corporate bodies, and benevolent individuals to help procure this life-saving equipment to reduce neonatal mortality in the district.

The Bottom Line

The "maiden" status of this event signals a shift toward preventive community health in Dormaa West. By teaching mothers how to "cook their way out of anemia," health officials hope to decrease the strain on the district's limited hospital resources.
